Toadstool's 1st Birthday Bash [Review]

Once again this review is a bit late- I've been having a few computer problems!!! Anyway, I'd been waiting for this party for months, the anticipation building until last Friday night when I was fit-to-burst! Once again the Toadstool crew made the venue look amazing, with new backdrops courtesy of Corky & Liz, the ultra-violet lighting and little touches that weren't immediately obvious but all added to the sort of grotto effect of the dancefloor. The management, bar-staff and doormen were friendly and welcoming BUT, a word of warning: The club has been forced by local by-laws to use a hand-held metal detector (cue much amusement from those folk with intimate piercings!) and to search people on the door (you know the drill- stash your stuff!).
The DJ's raised their game to a whole other level, possibly because of the headliner ANS, widely regarded to be one of the very best Psy-Trance DJ's the UK has to offer (and believe me, that reputation is fully justified!). Boris got the ball rolling with a steady set mixed perfectly that got the Toadsool costumed dancers (The Natterjacks) bouncing around the dancefloor with obvious glee. Next came Wayner who raised the tempo and the dancefloor began to fill up at a rapid rate. Rana beat the crowd up with an audio barrage that blitzed the entire place- I've NEVER seen so many people jumping on that dancefloor! And then there was Toad. I can't even begin to describe the maelstrom he created on the dancefloor- it was carnage of the highest order. Nick must be very proud of himself after that one- technically precise, yet incredibly instinctive, reading the cowd and responding accordingly. I was completely battered by the musical mayhem, and yet more was to come! ANS of Nano Records came on and the mayhem continued at a cracking pace. Perfect mixing, fantastic tunes and he looked to be enjoying it every bit as much as his audience who were flying by this time. The evening was rounded of by an intense, pounding mix by The Beast himself- the mighty F'da F'da. It was a killer, and all the DJ's were incredible.
The highlights? A tremendous Psy mix of Born Slippy had the dancefloor taking off like you'd never believe, and Rana in the booth with ANS rocking out and looking absolutely delighted!!! Would love to see more of that mate- particularly when you're peforming!
The low points? Apart from getting a little fuzzy and not being able to remember who dropped the mix of Born Slippy (sorry folks- it was a seriously messy night!), there were none!
On a serious note, this was by far the best Toadstool yet, and the crowd played no small part in making the night something special- it would be great to see so many people there EVERY month. It's by far the best night you can have in Gloucester at any time, and an absolute steal at only £7 entry to see the best DJ's headlining alongside the extremely talented residents.
